The Impact of Implementing a Contactless Smart Card System on Miami Dade Transit and its Customers
In 2009, Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) deployed an Automated Fare Collection System or “smart card” branded EASY Card. EASY Card offers the choice of various period passes, a stored value electronic purse, and the ability to access service by tapping a card on an electronic sensor (also known as contactless technology). MDT designed the EASY Card system to allow for future integration with other transit providers in the region such as the South Florida Regional Transit Authority’s TriRail, Palm Tran, and Broward County Transit. MDT completed enhancements to the technology infrastructure that was necessary to integrate Tri-Rail with the EASY Card system which was introduced at Tri-Rail in February 2011. Transit customers now have the ability to use a single fare instrument (EASY Card) to pay fares on both systems, with some fare policy limitations. The new fare payment system became very popular with customers such that 3 of every 4 trips taken on MDT are with an EASY Card or EASY Ticket. This webinar will present a detailed analysis of customer response to the EASY Card system in terms of ridership by mode, and fare media choice and purchase options. View Slides | View the Report
