The Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR), in collaboration with ENSCO, Inc., is proud to announce the publication of a new Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-funded report: Web-Based Simulator Training and Skill Transfer: Literature Review.
This comprehensive review analyzes research across transportation, healthcare, engineering, and military sectors to evaluate the effectiveness of web-based and low-fidelity simulation training for railroad engineers and maintenance workers.
The report explores:
- Best practices for simulator-based workforce training
- Criteria for evaluating simulation quality and effectiveness
- The role of simulator training in safety mitigation and regulatory compliance
- Comparisons across industries, revealing valuable cross-sector insights
Notably, the report finds that low-fidelity simulations, when properly implemented, can be as effective as high-fidelity systems—supporting workforce development efforts while being scalable and cost-efficient.
This research directly supports the FRA’s efforts to modernize training methods and expand virtual training opportunities while ensuring safety and performance standards remain high.
Congratulations to co-authors Achilleas Kourtellis, Lisa Staes, and Radim Bruzek on this impactful contribution to the field.
