Professional Growth Strengthens CUTR’s Research Capacity
As part of CUTR’s commitment to advancing expertise across emerging transportation issues, Gennaro Saliceto, WSO CSE/CSI, TSI-TSSP (Bus & Rail), has completed the University of South Florida’s Graduate Certificate in Toxicology. Saliceto serves as a Transportation Safety and Security Specialist and Bus System Safety and Security Reviewer in CUTR’s Transit Safety and Workforce Development (TSWD) program.
Applying Toxicology to Transportation Challenges
The certificate complements his background in public health, transportation safety and security, occupational safety, and emergency management, enhancing his ability to assess chemical exposures, analyze toxicological data, and incorporate health risk considerations into transportation research and practice.
This expanded expertise can support projects related to transit worker exposure, air quality, hazardous materials transportation, alternative fuels and battery incidents, emergency response, environmental health, and transportation-related pollutants. Saliceto is currently studying the health effects of transportation-generated air pollutants and occupational exposures while exploring research opportunities at the intersection of toxicology, transportation worker safety, emergency management, and community resilience.
Supporting the Mission of the TSWD Program
Through specialists like Saliceto, CUTR’s Transit Safety and Workforce Development program continues to expand its capacity to address emerging challenges facing the transportation industry. TSWD supports public transportation agencies through safety and security training, technical assistance, compliance reviews, workforce development initiatives, and applied research that helps improve the safety, resilience, and effectiveness of transit systems.
Looking Ahead
By continually broadening the expertise of its researchers, CUTR is strengthening its ability to address complex transportation issues that increasingly intersect with public health, environmental factors, worker safety, and community resilience. The addition of toxicology expertise creates new opportunities for interdisciplinary research and innovative solutions that benefit transportation agencies and the communities they serve.
