As a community-driven fork of openpilot, sunnypilot demonstrates how collaborative development can democratize cutting-edge vehicle automation technology. The seminar covers the system’s technical architecture—from vision-based perception to vehicle control—and explains how new cars are added through reverse engineering of CAN bus signals. We’ll examine the broader implications for transportation research, including access to anonymized driving datasets, a platform for testing new algorithms, and potential impacts on transportation safety and efficiency. By exploring both technical foundations and practical applications, this talk highlights how open-source development is reshaping automated driving technology and creating unique research opportunities not possible with closed commercial systems.

Jason Wen

Jason Wen is the Founder and Lead Developer of sunnypilot, an open-source driver assistant system that provides enhanced driving experiences for over 300 car makes and models, with a significant user community. His research and development focuses on creating customizable driving experiences through MADS (Modular Assistive Driving System), which empowers users to manage their own driving profiles according to personal preferences. He implemented safety enhancements by following established fail-safe redundancy measures at the hardware level, adhering to ISO standards while making significant contributions to safety code optimization and conducting rigorous testing protocols.
