Abstract
In this talk, Dr. Claudio Barbieri will illustrate, through real-world examples, how operations research and data analytics serve as powerful tools for making more informed and better decisions. Dr. Barbieri will initiate with examples of Franz Edelman winners and finalists, highlighting the diverse applications in transportation and logistics. The Franz Edelman competition aims to bring forward, recognize, and reward outstanding examples of operations research, management science, and advanced analytics in practice. Lastly, Dr. Barbieri will briefly introduce some recently challenging real-world research problems he has worked on.
Presenter
Dr. Claudio Barbieri da Cunha is a full professor at the Department of Transportation Engineering within the Polytechnic School at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. His academic leadership extends to serving as the former department Head and Deputy Head. He is also the director of the Center for Innovation in Logistic Systems (CISLOG) at USP. He has just concluded his term as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair visiting faculty in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Cunha earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1983, followed by M.Sc. (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in Transportation Engineering. His research interests span urban and sustainable transportation and logistics, with a focus on applying mathematical models and developing algorithms to address real-world problems. He has roughly 40 years of experience in transportation planning and logistics.
