The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) hosted a webinar on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to discuss transit rail grade crossing safety from both the operational and public education and outreach perspectives. A recording of the webinar and the presentation are now available.
FTA provided an overview and the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) and MxV Rail highlighted research on engineering aspects related to rail grade crossing safety, as featured in the FTA Standards Development Program Rail Transit Roadway and Pedestrian Grade Crossings Exploratory Report, and discussed trespassing research results.
The webinar also featured guest speakers from TriMet who talked about their experiences with rail grade crossings and the non-profit, Operation Lifesaver Inc., who discussed safety education and outreach to transit riders and available transit agency resources.
CUTR’s Achilleas Kourtellis, PhD, presented “Mitigation of Railroad Trespasser Fatalities and Injuries” – starting at the 11:43 mark in the video.
