Throughout 2022, members of the Planning and Corridor Management Program prepared for the retirement of its longtime program director Kristine Williams (scheduled for February 2023). CUTR and Kristine’s program staff will deeply miss her strong leadership and extensive research expertise. She will be replaced by Jeff Kramer, a senior research associate with decades of transportation planning and policy experience, including 23 years with CUTR.
Research Associate Tia Boyd was invited to serve as a member of the USF Master of Urban & Regional Planning Program Advisory Committee. Tia, along with Kristine Williams, published 2 papers in 2022, “Tools of the Trade: An Equity Toolkit for Planners and the Community,” in the American Planning Association State of Transportation Planning Report and “Enabling Transportation Planning Professional Advancement through Open Educational Resources” which was co-authored with research partners at the University of Texas at Arlington and California Polytechnic State University. Tia also made several presentations throughout the year including at the 2022 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting, 2022 Multimodal Transportation Workshop, 2022 ITS America Research Webinar series, and Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP) program.
Taylor Dinehart was named the 2022 National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NICR) Student of the Year. Taylor was appointed as a faculty research associate with CUTR in 2022.
Completed Projects
- Year 1 of the Tampa Bay Citizens Academy on Transportation (TB-CAT) was completed, and year 2 of TB-CAT was successfully launched in 2022.
- NCHRP 25-47: How to Measure and Communicate the Value of Access Management was completed in 2022 for the National Academy of Sciences. The project includes an Access Management Communication Toolkit with spreadsheet tools and resources for communicating the value of roadway access management to the public. The publication is expected in 2023.
- Hillsborough County Corridor Plan Best Practices Study was completed in 2022 for the Hillsborough County Community & Infrastructure Planning Department. Topics addressed in this study included the policy and planning context for corridor management in Florida, best practices for integrating land use context and modal options, and how resilience to climate change and emerging technology may be reflected in contemporary thoroughfare plans. The purpose of the project was to offer insight and guidance to Hillsborough County on the current state of the practice in Florida, and any best practices that may benefit the County as it updates its Corridor Plan.
- Crashes Related to Type and Location of Driveway Access was completed in 2022 for the Florida Department of Transportation. This study examined how commercial driveway access location and design interact with roadway and interchange characteristics to influence vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian safety. The publication is expected in 2023.
- Equitable Transportation Planning Curriculum for Urban Planning and Transportation Programs was completed in 2022 for the Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD). This curriculum provides emerging professionals with the training and tools needed to successfully integrate equity into transportation decision-making processes. Curriculum materials are expected to be available in 2023.
