As we reflect upon the eventful year of 2022, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) team has left an indelible mark in the field of transportation research and development. Their exceptional achievements and unwavering dedication have propelled them to the forefront of innovation and recognition.
- Recipient of the AASHTO Region 2 2022 High Value Research Supplemental Award in the Safety, Security, and Emergencies category for the FDOT Project entitled, “Pilot Implementation for Preventing Incorrect Turns at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings”. Dr. Pei-Sung Lin, Principal Investigator, was invited to present research results and findings at the TRB 2023 Annual Meeting.
- Pei-Sung Lin was selected as a Member of the TRB Standing Committee on Workforce Development and Organizational Excellence (AJE15) in April 2022 to serve as Committee Research Coordinator (CRC)
- The ITS, Traffic Operations and Safety team authored or co-authored a total of 9 papers in 2022 and conducted 16 technical presentations.
- The Florida Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Center hosted nearly 70 trainings with over 16,000 attendees from around the world. Dr. Pei-Sung Lin and Dr. Cong Chen presented a total of 4 sessions at NLTAPA Annual Conference.
- The Florida LTAP Center Team Members Alex Cruz, Kiryanna Stanley, Kristin Larsson, and Stephanie Lewis were recipients of a 2022 Outstanding Team Award from USF. And Kristin Larsson was a recipient of the USF 2022 Outstanding Staff Award.
- Yaye Keita joined the CUTR ITS team as a new research faculty in July 2022. In November 2022 she was selected as one of the first recipients for CUTR’s Internal Awards Program which will allow Dr. Keita to work on a research project titled Understanding Bicycle Signal Operations and Leading Bicycle Interval (LBI) Implementations, which may lead to publication and future funding opportunities.
- As part of the Safety by Design Florida initiative effort in FDOT’s District 1, CUTR Research Faculty, Jason Jackman (USF ‘05 & ‘12) worked with FDOT District 1 to plan and host the district’s first Vision Zero workshop in Southwest Florida. The purpose of the workshops was to educate FDOT staff and local leaders on efforts with the Safe System Approach, Vision Zero, and the Florida Department of Transportation’s Target Zero. Since then, the FDOT Vision Zero workshop has been replicated in other FDOT Districts.
- As part of the National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NICR) program, the ITS team worked on four innovative research projects for traffic congestion reduction and improvement of mobility and safety.
- Cong Chen was elected as a Board Officer of the Chinese Overseas Transportation Association and inaugurated at the TRB Annual Meeting in January 2022.
- The ITS, Traffic Operations and Safety team was awarded more than 20 research projects and highway safety grants with the funding of more than $3.1M.
