A GIS Methodology for Evaluating Bus Pedestrian Safety

This research involved a GIS analysis of pedestrian crashes that occurred within 100 feet of a bus stop in Broward County and Palm Beach County, Florida between 2011 and 2014. In Broward County, there were 357 pedestrian crashes within 100 feet of a BCT bus stop, of which 18 involved a BCT bus patron (5%). In Palm Beach County, there were 221 pedestrian crashes, of which 8 involved a Palm Tran bus patron (3.6%). When reading the police reports for all of the crashes, the single most recurring theme was pedestrians crossing at mid-block or somewhere else outside of the designated crosswalk. The Center for Urban Transportation Research at USF ranked the relative pedestrian safety of the bus stop locations based on three weighted variables: the number of pedestrian crashes within 100 feet of that bus stop, the annual average daily traffic of the street, and the number of bus passenger on/offs at that bus stop. The results were used to identify five bus stops in Broward County and five stops in Palm Beach County for a road safety audit (RSA).

Brian Pessaro has been a Senior Research Associate at CUTR since October 2009. His areas of research have included vehicle automation technology in transit, tolled managed lanes, bus rapid transit, transit performance management, and bus safety. Prior to working at CUTR, he worked for 7 years at the Florida Department of Transportation and the headquarters and district levels and for 3 ½ years at the San Diego Association of Governments. He holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida.
