Mobility Management Certificate offered
Over the past several months, CUTR, with sponsorship from the Florida Department of Transportation, has conducted an intensive and cost-free training program allowing participants to earn a Mobility Management Certificate.
More than 100 attendees participated in the courses offered through the program, which was specially designed to guide participants to plan, develop, design, operate, and evaluate transportation demand management (TDM) programs for the public and private sectors.
Four courses were offered at sites around the state, each taught by TDM professionals with expertise in developing and evaluating TDM programs and employment sites, current research, and technical tools.
"Foundations for Mobility Management," held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT), was conducted by Tom Bulger of Government Relations, Inc., who discussed ISTEA reauthorization and CMAQ funds (a major funding source for TDM activities), and Howard Jennings, co-chair of ACT's Welfare-to-Work Task Force, who addressed the challenges and opportunities facing the TDM community as it relates to welfare-to-work.
"TDM Management Operations and Evaluation," a three-day course, included instruction by CUTR TDM Program Director Phil Winters on the TDM planning process, financial management, evaluation criteria and procedures, trip reduction software, grantsmanship, and FHWA's TDM model and by FDOT Project Manager Liz Stutts on FDOT reporting requirements.
"Tools for Mobility Management," also conducted by Winters, with support from other CUTR faculty, included review of the various tools and techniques available to mobility managers in transportation demand management, transportation systems management, and intelligent transportation systems.
"Strategic Marketing for Mobility Managers," conducted by Winters and CUTR Research Associate Francis Cleland, was adapted from Strategic Marketing for Ridesharing Professionals developed by the Alliance to Save Energy. Included was a review of strategic planning concepts, an assessment of the current market situation, instruction on designing marketing strategies and evaluating marketing results.
All courses were taught with interactive instruction, on-screen presentations, challenging activities, videos, small group projects, and class discussion. Networking with other professionals from the public and private sectors was encouraged to help determine common problems, possible solutions, and innovative techniques.
Course workbooks and handouts developed specifically for the courses were distributed, and publications distributed included the Commute Alternatives Systems Handbook, Managing Corridor Development: A Municipal Handbook, and Managing Our Way Through Congestion. In addition, each participant received a certificate recognizing completion of the course.
