Fourth Annual African-American Mobility Symposium scheduled for April

In cooperation with the National Urban Transit Institute, the University of South Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, the Florida Transit Association, Project ACTION, and Florida A&M University, CUTR is producing the fourth annual African-American Mobility Symposium This year’s conference will be held at the Wyndham Harbour Island Hotel in Tampa on April 30-May 2, 1997.

Among the topics to be discussed are the Americans with Disabilities Act, travel patterns, public participation, environmental justice, transportation and land use, public education, livable communities, intermodalism, transportation and employment, and technology. Invited keynote speakers include Rodney Slater of the Federal Highway Administration, Gordon Linton of the Federal Transit Administration, Kweisi Mfume of the NAACP, and Hugh Price of the National Urban League.

  • "Location Characteristics of Inner-City Neighborhoods and Employment Accessibility of Low-Wage Earners," Qing Shen, MIT

  • "Market Penetration and Spatial Analysis of Healthy Baby Services," Talia McCray, University of Michigan

  • "Access to Public Transportation and Patterns of Career Development and Leisure Among African-American Women," Patricia Bethea, North Carolina A&T University

  • "Land Value Assessment Near Bus Transit Facilities," Ronald Goodwin & Carol Lewis, Texas Southern University

  • "The Effects of ITS on Rural and Minority Communities," James Singleton, Florida A&M University

  • "Traffic Calming and Its Role in Creating Livable Inner City Communities," Ian Lockwood, City of West Palm Beach, Florida

  • "Public Education in Urban Centers: Analysis, Trends, and Policy Issues," Lora G. Mayo, Commissioner of Baltimore City Public Schools
