CUTR serving as downlink site for national teleconferences

Facilities in CUTR’s new building have enabled the expansion of services to local transportation agencies and organizations that includes serving as a downlink site for transportation-themed teleconferences. These live conferences allow the viewing audience to both listen to and ask questions of international experts without the time or expense associated with traveling to distant conferences and meetings. CUTR has scheduled participation in several international, national, and regional transportation teleconferences in 1997. On May 14, "Tools and Techniques for Maintaining Roadsides with Reduced Environmental Impact" was held. The conference profiled innovative practices used by state DOTs and introduced promising mowing technologies and herbicide application systems.

The next teleconference, "Reauthorization of ISTEA (Part II)," will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and will focus on the effects of the National Economic Crossroads Transportation Efficiency Act (NEXTEA). Panelists will include Tom Larson, consultant and former FHWA Administrator; Darrel Rensink, AASHTO President; Bill Millar, APTA President; Hank Dittmar, STPP Executive Director; and Larry Dahms, Metropolitan Transportation Commission Executive Director.

Other teleconferences scheduled to be broadcast at CUTR include:

  • September 24, 1997, “Revisions to Small Particulate Matter and Ozone Standards”
  • November 7, 1997, “Watersheds and Transportation Planning”
  • November 24, 1997, “Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Environment”

The teleconferences are offered free of charge and will be held at CUTR. A list of scheduled events is included on CUTR’s Web site at http://www.cutr.usf.edu. Additional events will be scheduled as this method of technology transfer and information-sharing expands and increases in popularity. Future plans include teleconferences hosted, sponsored, and produced by CUTR that focus on state and regional transportation issues. To reserve a seat, please contact CUTR Program Assistant Sandy Geahr at (813) 974-9781.
