The USDOT has designated a consortium of eight university transportation centers, including CUTR, as the Southeast Transportation Center (STC). STC is one of 10 regional university transportation centers established in 1987 through national legislation to conduct transportation research and technology transfer activities of national significance.
SE UNIVERSITY TRANSPORTATION CENTERS CONSORTIUM AWARDED USDOT DESIGNATION
The theme of the STC is transportation safety, and the STC's advanced institute for transportation safety education will be housed at the University of Tennessee (UT), which will serve as the lead university in the consortium. Transportation centers at seven other southeastern universities-Florida, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Georgia State, South Florida, and the North Carolina system-comprise the consortium. Dr. Steve Richards, Director of the UT Transportation Center, will direct the STC, and Joyce Johnson of North Carolina A&T will serve as STC co-director. Funding for the STC for the 1995-96 academic year will be $2.2 million, with total funding over the three-year grant period approaching $7 million. In addition to supporting approximately 50 graduate and undergraduate students from various disciplines at the universities, the STC also will undertake research projects to address issues relating to highway and transit safety and security.
