First Florida Transportation Almanac Produced; Second Edition Will be Produced On CD-ROM and Include Atlas

In its continuing efforts to serve as an information resource for the state of Florida, CUTR recently developed and published the first Florida Transportation Almanac as part of its base-funded research program. The 274-page publication contains a wealth of information on transportation and related topics for use by transportation planners, managers, decisionmakers, and the general public. The first of its kind, the Almanac is envisioned as being an annual publication that provides an array of transportation-related statistics and information. Included are data from existing sources throughout Florida and the United States. A range of transportation topics is covered, including:

  • demographic information for the U.S., Florida, and the 67 counties in the state, with all data taken from the 1990 and previous Censuses
  • travel behavior characteristics and trends in Florida and the U.S., including summary statistics for all personal travel in the U.S. and Florida and in the aggregated metropolitan regions in Florida; also included are characteristics of the journey to work for the U.S., Florida, and its counties
  • modal statistics for highways, aviation, public transportation, rail, seaports, transportation demand management, freight, and intelligent transportation systems
  • tourism statistics for the state
  • transportation financing information, including summary data on Floridas transportation tax and fee sources and transportation costs associated with the construction and operation of various modes, including highways, bridges, airports, public transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • transportation education and research programs at the state's universities and colleges and a summary of activities of the state's transportation research organizations
  • a directory of contact information for various transportation-related organizations in Florida, including planning agencies, operating agencies, commissions, councils, and committees, among others.
  • A second edition of the Almanac is being planned that will include additional information as well as a variety of Florida transportation-related maps. Current plans are to produce the second edition on CD-ROM with downloadable data files. Copies of the publication were provided at no cost to approximately 2500 transportation professionals across Florida and the U.S. Requests for additional copies will be filled as long as the supply remains.
